How Many Districts in Da Nang? Where Tourists Should Stay

Da Nang has no districts today. Vietnam dissolved district-level government on July 1, 2025, when Da Nang merged with Quang Nam Province. The enlarged city now has 94 commune-level units: 23 wards, 70 communes, and 1 special zone (Hoang Sa). Before the change, Da Nang had 8 district-level units: six urban districts (Hai Chau, Thanh Khe, Son Tra, Ngu Hanh Son, Lien Chieu, Cam Le) and two rural or island districts (Hoa Vang and Hoang Sa).

You will still see "Hải Châu" and "Sơn Trà" in hotel addresses, maps, and everyday conversation. They are now ward names and local area references, not districts.

Let's Destination Danang explain to you What are Da Nang city ward/commune  - latest update.

Does Da Nang Still Have Districts? What Changed in 2025

Da Nang before July 2025: the 8 former districts

Da Nang was a centrally governed city with eight district-level units. Below the district level, there were 56 wards and communes (45 wards and 11 communes) until the end of 2024. A reorganization on January 1, 2025 reduced that to 47 (36 wards and 11 communes), and the 8 districts stayed unchanged until July 2025.

Da Nang after the merger: 94 wards, communes and 1 special zone

Under Resolution 202/2025/QH15 (June 12, 2025), Quang Nam Province and Da Nang were merged into the new Da Nang city. Resolution 1659/NQ-UBTVQH15 (June 16, 2025) set its commune-level structure. Vietnam moved to a two-tier model: provincial-level (provinces and centrally governed cities) and commune-level (wards, communes and special zones). Hoang Sa district became the Hoang Sa Special Zone.

Interesting Facts: 10 communes may become wards

In June 2026, the Da Nang People's Council approved a plan to upgrade 10 communes to wards: Hoa Vang, Hoa Tien, Ba Na, Dai Loc, Dien Ban Tay, Chien Dan, Nui Thanh, Tam Anh, Nam Phuoc and Thang Binh. If the central government approves, Da Nang would have 33 wards, 60 communes and 1 special zone, still 94 units in total. A central inter-agency team reviewed the plan on October 3, 2026. Until approval, the official structure is 23 wards, 70 communes, and 1 special zone.

Da Nang Districts Map for Travelers

For visitors, a useful map shows these zones:
  1. City center (Hai Chau and Thanh Khe): Dragon Bridge, Han Market, the Museum of Cham Sculpture and riverside hotels.
  2. My Khe beachfront (An Hai / Son Tra side): the city's main beach strip with hotels, cafés and seafood.
  3. Ngu Hanh Son coast: My An, An Thuong, Non Nuoc Beach and the Marble Mountains.
  4. Son Tra Peninsula: Monkey Mountain, Linh Ung Pagoda and luxury resorts.
  5. Airport and inland: The airport sits in the old Hai Chau area, in today's Hoa Cuong Ward area. Hoa Vang and Ba Na lie to the west toward Ba Na Hills.
  6. Hoi An (now part of Da Nang): about 30 minutes south. It is a distinct destination.

Where to Stay in Da Nang: Best Areas by Trip Type

Best area for first-time visitors

The city center or the My Khe beachfront. The center suits sightseeing, food and quick airport transfers. My Khe suits travelers who want the beach but still want easy access to the center, about 3 km away.

Best area for beach holidays (My Khe and An Thuong)

My Khe has the widest choice of hotels, cafés and seafood restaurants. An Thuong is just south, in the Ngu Hanh Son area, with a livelier international food scene.

Best area for families and resorts (Son Tra and Non Nuoc)

Son Tra Peninsula offers quiet, nature-focused luxury resorts. Non Nuoc Beach, near the Marble Mountains, suits beachfront resort stays with more space.

Best area for culture and food (Hai Chau and Hoi An)

Hai Chau puts you near the Han River, markets, and museums. Hoi An suits old-town atmosphere and slow travel. Many travelers split their time, or visit Hoi An as a day trip.

Best area for budget travelers

Thanh Khe and inland Hai Chau have local eateries and lower prices.

Da Nang Districts vs. Tourist Areas: My Khe, Airport and Hoi An

Tourist zones don't follow administrative lines. When booking, search by landmark ("near Dragon Bridge," "My Khe Beach") rather than by district name, because listings mix old districts and new wards.

My Khe Beach: Historically in Son Tra District, in the old Phuoc My ward, which is now part of An Hai Ward. The wider beach strip continues south toward the old Ngu Hanh Son area.

Da Nang Airport: In the old Hai Chau area, on Duy Tan Street (the former Hoa Thuan Tay ward, now part of Hoa Cuong Ward). It is about 2 km from the center and 3 km from My Khe. Confirm the exact ward against an official source if you need it for a document.

Hoi An: A cluster of wards (Hoi An, Hoi An Dong, Hoi An Tay) plus Tan Hiep Commune within enlarged Da Nang. Travelers still treat it as its own destination.

Da Nang Districts FAQs

How many districts are in Da Nang?
None. Vietnam abolished the district level on July 1, 2025. Da Nang now has 94 commune-level units: 23 wards, 70 communes and one special zone, Hoang Sa.

How many districts did Da Nang have before the merger?
Eight: six urban districts (Hai Chau, Thanh Khe, Son Tra, Ngu Hanh Son, Lien Chieu, Cam Le) and two rural or island districts (Hoa Vang and Hoang Sa).

Which district is Da Nang city center?
The old Hai Chau District, home to the Han River waterfront and Dragon Bridge. Hai Chau is now a ward, and the city's administrative center is in Hai Chau Ward.

Which district is best to stay in Da Nang?
There is no single best area. The center suits sightseeing and food, the My Khe coast suits beaches, and Son Tra and Non Nuoc suit resorts. First-timers usually do well in the center or near My Khe.

Is Hai Chau or Son Tra better for first-time visitors?
Choose Hai Chau for the center, markets and Han River attractions. Choose Son Tra and My Khe if the beach is central to your trip. The two areas are only a short ride apart.

Which district is My Khe Beach in?
Traditionally Son Tra. It now falls mainly within An Hai Ward, and the beach strip extends south toward the old Ngu Hanh Son area. Search by beach name and current ward instead of old district.

Which district is the airport in?
The old Hai Chau area, mainly Hoa Cuong Ward today. Verify the exact ward if you need it for official paperwork.

Which district is closest to Da Nang Airport?
The central Hai Chau area is closest, at about 2 km. Son Tra and My Khe are about 3 km away. Focus on your hotel's real travel time rather than the district label.

Is Hoi An part of Da Nang?
Yes. Since July 1, 2025, Hoi An is part of the enlarged Da Nang. It is organized as Hoi An, Hoi An Dong and Hoi An Tay wards plus Tan Hiep Commune, but it remains a separate destination and UNESCO World Heritage site.

Do I need to know the district names for hotel bookings?
No. The hotel name and address are enough. Knowing names like Hai Chau, Son Tra, My Khe and An Thuong still helps you judge whether a hotel is near the beach, center or airport.

Which district is closest to My Khe Beach?
The old Son Tra District, around today's An Hai Ward. The beach corridor continues toward the old Ngu Hanh Son area, and the center is a short ride across the Han River.

How Da Nang's Administrative Divisions Changed (1888–2025)

French period and wartime. Under French rule, Da Nang was separated from Quang Nam as a concession and renamed Tourane. In 1952 it was merged into Quang Nam Province as Quang Nam–Da Nang. In October 1967, Quang Da Province and Da Nang were combined into the Quang Da Special Zone, and Da Nang was split into District I, District II and District III.

After 1975. In February 1976, Quang Nam and Quang Da provinces merged into Quang Nam–Da Nang. On August 30, 1977, the three districts were merged back into a single city.

1996 separation. On November 6, 1996, the 9th National Assembly, at its 10th session, approved splitting Quang Nam–Da Nang into Quang Nam Province and the centrally governed city of Da Nang, effective January 1, 1997. The new city covered 942.46 km² with 663,115 people. A government decree set up five districts (Hai Chau, Thanh Khe, Son Tra, Ngu Hanh Son, Lien Chieu) plus Hoa Vang and Hoang Sa. In 2005, Cam Le District was created from part of Hoa Vang, bringing the total to eight.

2025 reform. Da Nang merged with Quang Nam, district-level government was abolished, and the city moved to 94 commune-level units.
